The brief
The client wanted the staircase to be safe to use at night and to look like a design feature, not just a way between floors.
What we did
We planned the lighting before the finishes. Cables were routed into the wall and step positions while the stair was still being built, so nothing would show afterwards. LED strips were then fitted into the step nosings, and a diagonal LED line was set into the wall to follow the slope of the stair.
The result
Each step is lit evenly from its edge, and the wall line gives soft background light. The stair is easier to see at night and now stands out as one of the home's features.
